McLuhan always struck people as being guilty of
hyperbole, and I think that may be the largest and
most significant of his failings. That is, he did not
suffer fools well, although he was a very generous
man in his treatment of people who were serious.
And so, he used to say things for example like,
“The medium is the message and therefore the
content of the programming of any sort in any
medium is irrelevant.” Well, that’s going just a
shade too far. I remember asking him does that
mean that the content of Homer’s Odyssey is not
significant? And he said, “No, no, no, not at all. But
you can’t even access the content unless you
know that it is something that’s coming to you
